Why is London my favourite city on the planet? This is why.

I met Rocio a bit more than two years ago when I came to London for the first time. We had a friend in common and went out for drinks soon after my arrival. She asked what my first impressions about London were and I said I really loved it – all of it. She had been here for about a year and said “after some time, once the initial charm has gone away, you will see you won’t like it too much”. She was wrong. I didn’t talk to her for a really long time and when I did about a week ago, she asked if was still in love with London  and I said “absolutely!” There are plenty of reasons why the largest city of Europe is so great, but I will mention those that come to my mind first and which are the ones that matter the most to me.

London is a well-balanced and comprehensive city, it has it all, for everyone. It has the history, but it is modern at the same time. It has the classy side in Knightsbridge, Mayfair, Chelsea and Hampstead, but it also has contrasting scenes and styles in Camden, Dalston and Shoreditch. From art and history to some of the best universities of the world, it is all here. It is also an internationally recognised business and cultural centre which offers professionals and artists an ocean of opportunities.

It is perhaps the most multicultural city of the world, which makes it easy to enjoy the experience of learning from different cultures and build friendships and relationships connected to the whole world. The fact that almost everyone speaks English makes it easy to communicate and truly take advantage of this diversity.

At the same time, I think the British people are very warm and it works well: the city is pretty clean and safe in most parts; people are polite and respectful even if they do not know you. The public transport is reliable and it is easy to travel nationally or internationally. This means the basics are covered.

Being in London allows me to enjoy of the country’s unbeatable music heritage a lot more closely: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, David Bowie, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay… As music is an important part of my life, knowing that I live where all these amazing legends have been born makes it thrilling.

Oh, and one last thing: I personally don’t think the weather is too bad. It may not be great… but it’s definitely not as bad as its reputation!
