For the past two months we held the fourth edition of the Uniplaces Scholarship. The results are out — check out who the lucky winners are — and now we want to give a big shout out to the universities who are having a hand in educating these kind students. Here are the top 60 kindest universities in Europe:

Portugal

1. Universidade de Lisboa | Number of applicants: 97

The University of Lisbon dates back to the 13th century, and it’s the largest university in Portugal after the merger of University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon. Around 50,000 students study in the university’s 18 different faculties.

2. Universidade do Porto | Number of applicants: 87

Spain

1. Universitat de Barcelona | Number of applicants: 71

University of Barcelona has been elected as the best university in Spain several times and is the principal centre of university research in the country. It was established in the 15th century — nowadays, almost 63,000 students study here.

2. Universidad de Navarra | Number of applicants: 60

3. Universidad de Sevilla | Number of applicants: 55

4. Universidad Complutense de Madrid | Number of applicants: 55

5. Universidad Rey Juan Carlos | Number of applicants: 52

6. Universidad de Granada | Number of applicants: 49

7. Universidad de Cantabria | Number of applicants: 42

8. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona | Number of applicants: 30

9. Universitat de València | Number of applicants: 29

10. Universidad de Deusto | Number of applicants: 27

France

1. Aix-Marseille Université | Number of applicants: 21

The University of Aix-Marseille was founded in the early 15th century. Today it is formed by the merger of the University of Provence, the University of the Mediterranean and Paul Cézanne University, turning it into the largest university in the French-speaking world, with about 70,000 students.

The Humboldt University of Berlin is one the oldest universities in Berlin, and it was founded in the early 19th century. The Humboldt university model has strongly influenced other European universities, and currently teaches over 32,500 students.

Almost 600km to the West, University of Cologne is one of the largest universities in Germany with more than 48,000 students.

4. Karlsruher Institut für Technologie | Number of applicants: 7

Coventry University is a public research university with more than 29,000 students. It is the fastest growing university in the UK, and it was elected the highest-ranked modern university in the UK in both the Guardian University Guide and the Complete University Guide.
