Summer is over. Now it’s time to go back to university — or go for the very first time! This means it’s time to get ready for the beginning of another academic year. Instead of groaning and daydreaming about your next vacation, set yourself up for a whole year of success and fun times with some of these tips to have a successful year at university!
These tips are meant to prepare you for your upcoming daily life. It’s not just about having good results; it’s also about acquiring the right skills to face the demands of your future professional life. Getting organised now for the studying and the workload you’ll have during the upcoming months will make your school year a stress-free experience.
1. Start your day with a healthy breakfast
A healthy breakfast will keep you going throughout your entire day. Your first meal of the day should include as many vitamins and proteins as possible — that way you’ll start your day full of energy! You can mix it up every day, like eating an omelette or oatmeal topped with honey and fruit. Bear in mind that in the beginning of a big day you need something that will fuel you up!
2. Plan your days out
Every morning while you’re taking your breakfast, write down everything you need to do that day. You’ll get the feeling that it’s all out of your head, and this way it’ll be easier to highlight what your biggest goals for the day are and prioritise all the tasks you have to do from there. It’s a good idea to start fresh with a new notebook to write your tasks down. It’s a great way to start your day and de-stress!
3. Save the easiest for last

This is a very useful tip: when you have lots of work to do and a short deadline to deliver it in, figure out the hardest things first while your brain is still fresh. It’s important to first focus all your positive energies on the more demanding tasks; that way you’ll still have strengths for the easier ones in the end. A study partner can also be good for you!
4. Give back
Check out volunteering activities at your university and even in your local community. There are so many things you can do to give back. Donating food, volunteering in a kindergarten or in an elderly home are examples of noble tasks you can start looking for. Every time you help someone else, you’ll end up with a feeling of a job well done. In the end, what you receive is way bigger than what you give!
5. Stay positive
If you live your life amongst negative thoughts, all your classmates and best friends will get bored with you and they’ll stop sharing their free time with you. Moreover, you’ll start being disappointed with any step you take in your life and everything will seem like a nightmare. Stay positive!
6. Buddy up
Part of being successful is surrounding yourself with the right people. Search for the people who bring out the best of you and who challenge you to be better. Make sure you choose a buddy with whom you identify. You might not get it right the first time, but in time you will find someone to team up with, to guide you, advise you, to party with you, and to live new and exciting experiences with.
7. Say “no” to clutter in your room
If you’re not worried about finding what you need, your brain will feel clear too. Organising yourself means organising your space. Take some weekly time to put all your things in the right place. Throw away all the things you no longer use. Just as How I Met Your Mother taught us, if you haven’t used it in the previous year, you won’t need it.
8. Save up
This is a good time for you to start doing some savings. At the end of the year you’ll have enough money to treat yourself with something that is valuable for you. It could a trips, going to a festival, or just new clothes and other stuff. It’s super important that your hard work during one whole year will be rewarded in the end; it’ll keep you motivated with all the school work!
9. Choose your ideal spot
The right place leads to the right mindset! Make sure you choose a place where you won’t be distracted, where you can focus and really dedicate yourself to what you are doing. Basically, a place where you’ll pass hours studying without getting tired of it!
