Not all scholarships in the world are based in academic achievements. The truth is, you don’t have to be an A+ student to get some help with your tuition fees. In many cases, you just have to be unique in your own way… like making a killer sandwich. Sounds easy, right? Here’s a list of the 10 most unusual scholarships we found around the world:
1. For tall people (USA)
Are you over 6’ 2” (188cm) tall, under 21, and going into your first year at uni? If that’s a yes, you could get yourself the Tall Clubs International Foundation’s $1000 scholarship.
2. For vegetarians/vegans (UK)
Have you given up meat? It does more than saving the animals! The Vegetarian Charity offers around £30,000 ever year to assist with education or the relief of poverty of vegetarian or vegan students under the age of 26.
3. Descendants of forced labourers in the Nazi regime (Austria)
The Scholarship Foundation of the Republic of Austria offers research scholarships for students who are descendants of forced labourers or citizens who come from countries that have exceptionally suffered from the Nazi regime. The scholarship is worth €1040 a month for a maximum of 4 months.
4. For mediums (USA)
So you say you can speak to the “other side”, that you can communicate with the parallel universe… You’ll be happy to know there’s a scholarship for you too! The Spiritualists’ National Union awards a yearly scholarship to those who present the spookiest encounter with the paranormal.
5. For kind students (Worldwide)
Of course, we couldn’t forget about our own Uniplaces Scholarship. It’s definitely not as odd as some of the others on this list, but it’s got the awesome advantage of not caring about what your academic grades look like. All you have to do is help out a student (the more, the merrier) and tell us all about it at scholarship.uniplaces.com. Easy!
6. For the most creative peanut butter sandwich (USA)
No, this isn’t a joke. Every peanut butter sandwich is incredible, but within the realms of amazingness, the person who presents the most unique and unusual peanut butter sandwich wins a $25,000 scholarship from Jif Peanut Butter in the USA. Get your peanut butter jelly time going!
7. For people called Zolp (USA)
So your parents kept Zolp as your surname. Use it to your advantage! You can get yourself a scholarship at Loyola University of Chicago.
8. For amateur golfers (Ireland)
The Paddy Harrington golf scholarship programme offers a €1000 scholarship plus 10 hours of training per week and 12 hours of coaching per month to amateur golfers who want to attend the National University of Ireland in Maynooth. Time to practice your swing!
9. For Swine Managers (USA)
So your love for pigs and other swines has brought you to study how to artificially inseminate boars, and now you’re looking for a scholarship to help you out. Don’t worry, the International Boar Semen has your back.
10. For viking descendants (Sweden)
Well, for Swedish students, at least. If you have the blood of Thor running through your veins, then fear not (you know no fear!). Citizens of the Scandinavian country are entitled to a year-long scholarship that covers tuition, housing and extensive travels in the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA.
BONUS: 11. For Beyoncé fans (USA)
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of her latest album, superstar Beyoncé Knowles-Carter created the Formation Scholars award to encourage and support four young women in four US universities. You don’t necessarily have to be a Beyoncé fan (although, how can you not be?), but you do have to be a female student pursuing studies in creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.
