6 Reasons Why We Should All Take a Gap Year

The gap year is very popular, especially, among American teenagers before starting college. But this experience is becoming more popular in Europe. The people who usually take a gap year are mainly students but, guess what? It is a choice for everyone since a gap year is meant to be to reflect and unwind.

The good news are that it doesn’t have an expiration date. It is true that the more you let time go by, the harder it will be to get away. Why? Well, it is simple: boundaries. Having a job, a family, friends, a pet or, even a gym membership, may be the things keeping you in place. Bu if you really desire to go away for sometime you don’t have to let anything stop you.

So, when should I go abroad? When you feel that you need it, and believe me when I say that taking a gap year in the right moment could bring you a lot more than you can expect.

Here are 6 reasons why we should take a gap year once in a life time.

1. It will help you out with your doubts

Sometimes it is not that you’re are not ready for the next step in our life, sometimes you just need to see things from a different perspective. That’s why the gap year is so popular before starting University, or right after graduating. It gives people the chance to reflect and think deeply about what do they really want to study and later on work on.

It happens to me all the time that when I let the situation rest, I usually come up with the most suitable solution.

2. You will meet different people

Meeting people from all over the world will give you so many different points of view. It will let you see life through different approaches and will provide you with new ideas.

How? Well, It is simple. Things work in different ways in every country, maybe they know something that you didn’t even know that existed. This is another way that will help you out to clear your mind.

3. You will discover yourself

Spending time with people that we’ve know for all our life stops us from really getting to know ourselves out of our comfort zone.

A gap year will make you realise a lot of aspects about yourself. Are you as outgoing as you though? Or are you shyer than you ever imagined? All the answers will help you in your decisions making because the better you know yourself, the most accurately you will be able to understand what you want. If you choose to solo travel you will have to break the ice and be a bit of an extrovert, but it’s worth it. Maybe you’re an extrovert and you just didn’t know!

4. It will be a once in a lifetime experience

A gap year is not necessarily just for students or soon to be students. It’s true that the younger you are, the less ties you have, which makes it easier to leave everything behind and go discover yourself for a while.

But, don’t get obsessed with age, at the end it’s just a number. I know many people who decided to take a gap year when they were older and it was also the year of their lives. I, for instance, finished my University degree and before starting any Master, I decided to go abroad.

5. You will have a chance to relax

Have you ever feel stuck? Sometimes we tend to run and we just want immediate results. It seems like things always have to go smoothly when the truth is that they usually don’t. Stop, unwind and let it flow. It is really important to take a break and recharge your batteries after a period of stress or before an important choice. Only after a quality break we will be able to face all the problems and come back to the battlefield.

6. You will discover a whole different culture

Have you ever thought about how many things we don’t know because we couldn’t even imagine that something like that could exist? Well, that’s basically the power of travelling: ‘’the only thing that you buy and makes you richer’’. Discovering new cultures will open your mind, and will make you more tolerant with many aspects of life. Travelling will also make you a more critical thinker and probably more creative since the more insight you have, the more ideas you will come up with.

Taking a gap year is something that will scream you from your deepest inside. If any of these six reasons sound familiar to you, don’t think it twice, the best things in life are those which came out of the blue.
