Planning to go for a semester abroad? I can tell you from personal experience that you’re already thinking on the right lines. However, choosing the right destination is just as important! Since you’re reading this, I’m assuming Portugal is already on your list and you’re confronted with the one question that everyone is: Lisbon or Porto? Well, for most people it may be hard to decide, but, for me, it’s pretty simple. Here are 6 reasons why Lisbon is better than Porto for Erasmus.
1. Way more international!
Interacting with people from across the globe is always delightful and one of the very important reasons why we choose to go for Erasmus. Considering the fact that Lisbon is one of the most popular destinations for Erasmus students, do you really think you can find a better place than this beautiful city if you want to meet amazing people? I thought the same!
2. Much better weather
As the old African proverb goes, ‘Weather and mood go hand in hand’ (I, obviously, just made that up). But if you actually think about it, we pay close attention to weather forecasts while planning a 3-day trip so why not when planning to be at a place for at least a few months? If you’re a fan of cold, rainy and extremely windy weather, by all means, book your ticket to Porto right now. However, if what you’re looking for are nice, sunny days spent on the beach or going around exploring the city, Lisbon is the place to be.
3. Beaches! Oh, so many beaches
Beach, please! I want you to visualise this as you read on: Lying down in the sun on a different beach every time with a fantastic yet different view. Like the sound of it? Well, it’s high time you got a feel of it too. Unlike Porto, Lisbon has a great variety of beaches that also happen to be very easily accessible. I’m sure that’s not something you want to miss out on!
4. Erasmus Corner
I literally heard words like ‘Cheers’, ‘Prost’, ‘Salud’ and many more when I wrote ‘Erasmus Corner’. By now you’re probably already wondering what this place is and what’s the big deal, right? Erasmus Corner is an amazing spot in Barrio Alto (a must-visit party neighbourhood in Lisbon) that is specifically meant for Erasmus students to get together every night (I’m not even exaggerating!) and drink together, and oftentimes end up going to the club together in a big group. As an Erasmus student, this will definitely be the highlight of your semester abroad. Not something you can expect in Porto.
5. Crazier nightlife
Here in Lisbon we really know how to party. Unlike the “Cidade Invicta”, Lisbon is the city that never sleeps. There are unlimited bars and clubs all over the city to make sure you get an Erasmus experience that is unparalleled in all regards. Whether you want to go clubbing by the river or have a few drinks in a traditional neighbourhood somewhere else in the city, we’ve got it all. Besides, what’s the fun in Erasmus if your craving for a crazy nightlife isn’t satisfied?
6. So many great universities
Coming to the more serious part, Lisbon happens to be one of the oldest cities in Europe. This means that not only is this city rich in history, culture and tradition but also has some of the most well-renowned universities. Irrespective of the field of study you plan to pursue, there’s going to be a remarkable university in Lisbon offering your course. In other words, you get to balance your academic and social life in the best way possible!
Long story short, if you’re looking for an unforgettable Erasmus experience, Lisbon is the destination to choose! Come to this wonderful city and we’ll be here to welcome you with open arms.
