10 best places to Study in Lisbon you need to know about

Exam season isn’t that far off and the all the usual spots are starting to get busy. If you’re looking for some cool new places to study in Lisbon, check out this short list with the 10 best quiet cafés and public spaces that are just perfect for studying!

1. Café do Largo

Largo Café Estudio Free wi-fi, great and cheap coffee (€.60) and the atmosphere is great. Tables outside to enjoy sunny days, and plenty of seating space inside. One of the best cafés in Lisbon to study in!
Address: Largo do Intendente Pina Manique, 16-19
Bonus: If you’ve got some extra coins, you can always leave a suspended coffee for the poorer locals to enjoy – this is one of the only places in Lisbon to do this.


2. Casa independente

Casa Independente will blow your mind the first time you visit. This old palace was converted with random vintage furniture into a cultural association and café. It has huge rooms, really good wifi, the food and drinks are amazing! Not very easy to find as it doesn’t have any signs: it’s the open door underneath the torn flag in Intendente.

Bonus: There’s a secret beer garden to make the most of a sunny day.



CAES best places to study in Lisbon

This list’s best hidden jem, it’s one of those city secrets locals don’t tell anybody else. CAES is a study centre on the rooftop of the concrete church of Arroios. It’s very simple: plastic tables on terrace and old school desks in small rooms.  Has a small kitchen for you to use with microwaves and kettles.
Address: Rua Alves Torgo, nr.1 – Top floor.
Open: They keep the place open extra late during exam seasons.
Bonus: Most kick-ass, free, untouristic view of Lisbon.


4. Biblioteca Nacional

The only chance you don’t know BNP (the library) is if you haven’t arrived in Lisbon yet. This is the huge national library close to the big University of Lisbon campus, so it’s the main go-to spot for UL students to study.
Address: Campo Grande, 83.
Open: 9.30-19.30 (Mondays-Fridays). 9.30-17.30 (Saturdays). Closed Sundays.


5. Picoas Plaza

The Centro de Informações Urbanas de Lisboa is a small, silent study space worth checking out if you’re looking for something very quiet. You have to sign-in to enter, but there’s no fee. Has free wi-fi, but closed on weekends.

6. Biblioteca Orlando Ribeiro

A cool little library. It has nice gardens around and because not that many people use it you can easily find your share of peace and quiet.

Open: 13.00-19.00 (Saturdays-Mondays). 10.00 to 19.00 (Tuesdays-Fridays). Closed Sundays.


7. LER devagar

LER Devagar is definitely one of the world’s coolest bookshops. It occupies an old factory space and much of the machinery is still in place. If you don’t mind some people coming and going around you, the tables of the two cafés inside are some of the coolest places to study in Lisbon.
Address: Rua Rodrigues de Faria 103
Open: 06.00-04.00 (Monday-Sunday).
Bonus: Marta’s Cakes on the upstairs catwalk are so good they will redefine your love for Lisbon.

8. Rooftop Café: Pollux

Best places to study in Lisbon

Another hidden gem is Pollux’s rooftop café. Go up the elevator to the top floor and then up the stairs. Wi-fi for customers, and the prices are some of the lowest in the city centre.

Open: 10.00-19.00 (Monday-Saturday).
Bonus: The views over Baixa will blow your mind.


9. Beau Sejour Palace

If you live or study in Benfica, the Beau Sejour is a small palace off the beaten track. Never very busy (actually quite empty) you’ll find seating space in the library inside.
Address: Rua Rodrigues de Faria 103
Schedule: 11.00-17.00 (Monday-Friday)
Bonus: There have been rumours that the Palace is haunted for years.

10.  IST Study Area

IST 24h places to study

One of the buildings in IST (“Pavilhão do Civil”) has a study centre that’s open 24 hours a day, pretty much every day of the year. It’s always busy, as it’s one of the few spaces in the city that are open through the night.
Address: Instituto Superior Técnico, Alameda D. Afonso Henriques
All of the time.
Bonus: Plenty of rooms on the sides if you want to work in groups.
