If you’re headed to your Erasmus in Porto, then I believe you’re also more than excited to try our famous dish, francesinha, one of the 12 life-changing sandwiches elected by The Daily Meal. Think of it as a better version of a croque monsieur; it’s basically a calorie bomb in the shape of a sandwich covered in cheese and a spicy sauce and served with french fries. Inside, it’s filled with bacon, sausage, steak, and other things depending on the restaurant. Check out 5 places to have the best francesinhas in Porto:

Cervejaria Brasão

Where: Rua de Ramalho Ortigão, 28

The francesinha in Brasão is quite unique in its look and flavour when compared with the rest. The decoration and atmosphere of the place also contribute to a lovely meal. Plus, you can choose from a vast selection of craft beers to go with your francesinha.

Café Santiago

Where: Rua Passos Manuel, 226

This small café is one of the locals’ favourite spot for francesinhas. It’s so popular that the queue often goes all the way outside. The secret of this traditional dish is in the sauce, and rumour has it that Santiago’s sauce is the best in town.

Tappas Caffé

Where: Estrada da Circunvalação, 7674 F

Tappas makes their francesinhas in a traditional wood-fired oven, which turns the cheese into the star of the plate. That and their secret extra spicy sauce. Also, the staff is very lively, making this the best spot to go with a big group for an enjoyable night. For a last kick, do try the complementary xiripiti they offer at the end of your meal.

Santa Francesinha

Where: Praça dos Poveiros, 72

Francesinha is part of the restaurant’s name, and that basically says it all. If you want a flavourful and mouth-watering francesinha in a cheap and pleasant place, make sure to visit this place.

Lado B

Where: Rua Passos Manuel, 190

Lado B is in one of Porto’s most emblematic streets. Their francesinha is trademarked as the best in the world, and it is indeed good, but is it the best? I’ll leave that for you to judge.
