If you are reading this, you probably are one of the luckiest people all over the world. Maybe you are thinking why? But it’s simple, you are going to spend at least 6 months in one of the most magical cities of Spain: Sevilla. So Why is Sevilla the best city to study in?
As the famous Spanish writer Antonio Gala once said, “Lo malo no es que los Sevillanos piensen que tiene la ciudad más bonita del mundo…lo peor es que puede que tengan hasta razón”, which means: “The problem is not that Sevillians think they have the most beautiful city in the world, it’s that they might actually be right.”
You will understand this during your time here, but we are here to help you comprehend this better, to discover the attraction, the magic and the passion of this city that never rests and is alive day and night.
Welcome to the capital of Andalucía. Welcome to Sevilla.
1. The warm weather never leaves
As a city in the south of Spain and away from the coast, Sevilla is one of the warmest cities in the country. It means that throughout the year you can just wear t-shirts and show off your shades. We are not used to the rain and definitely not the cold, either. But you have to be careful with that. Many people don’t take care of their skin, and with so much sun, you can easily get burned and look like a tomato, so use protection.
2. We have no beach, but we do have a river
As mentioned before, Sevilla is not on the coast, so we have no beaches. But don’t worry! We have one of the biggest rivers in Spain, the Guadalquivir. With more than ten bridges crossing it, there will always be an opportunity to take lovely pictures, especially when the sun is setting and the reflections on the water have indescribable colours. This isn’t the only good thing about the Guadalquivir, though. If you love rowing, you will see that throughout the day there are always people rowing down the river. And one last thing! If you have the opportunity to do so, do not hesitate in visiting all the pubs and bars on both sides of the river.
3. Sevillanas and Flamenco
Sevilla is a city with a lot of rhythm and soul. It’s one of the most famous places where people dance and sing Flamenco. Here you can find people singing it everywhere on the streets or you can go to a “tablao” to watch dancers show off their Flamenco skills. You can also learn our typical dance, called Sevillanas, which makes you feel like a true Sevilla local.
4. Tapas and cheap beer
Cheap, good and healthy, it’s simple. In Sevilla we cook the Mediterranean way, so we can be proud of having the most delicious food in the world, and of course the healthiest. In Sevilla we have bars everywhere and in them you can savour all sorts of famous tapas like Serranitos, Papas Bravas, Chocos, Menudo, Montaditos, Salmorejo, etc… Maybe now this doesn’t sound familiar to you, but trust me, it will. And what’s the best thing to drink with a Tapa? A really cold beer! And as we are in Sevilla you have to try the Cruzcampo, a beer from the south of Spain. You’ll understand what I mean by cheap when you find ½ litre of cold beer for just one euro ;).
5. Giralda and the Cathedral
Over the centuries, Sevilla has been part of several different countries and cultures. What does this mean? It means that we have many buildings built for different civilisations’ purposes. Probably the most important place in the city is the Cathedral. Standing as the biggest gothic cathedral in the world, and built by the Christians, once you go inside it, you’ll find the Giralda, which was built as a minaret for the Muslims during the Moorish period.
6. Feria de Abril
Us Sevillians are really party people, so of course we have our own “festival”. The Feria de Abril happens every year for a week during the second semester, usually around April. During this week, we drink, we eat, we dance and we have a lot of fun because it’s our week!! I can try to describe it, but a video will show you better what the Feria de Sevilla is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNDZ0DPegD0
7. Game of Thrones and Star Wars
Are you a Game of Thrones addict? Do you like Star Wars? Then you’ll probably know that the Kingdom of Dorne, in the 5th season of GoT, was recorded in the Alcáceres, and that some scenes from Star Wars Episode II were recorded in the Plaza de España. You will have the opportunity of taking pictures where your idols where recording!! Dreams come true in Sevilla!!
8. Football is life
If you like sports and football in particular, this is the place for you. We are really lucky to have two of the most historically important teams in the Spanish league here in Sevilla: Real Betis Balompié and Sevilla Football Club. There is a huge rivalry between them, but it’s something special. 50% of Sevilla support Real Betis and the other half support Sevilla F.C., so you’ll probably make friends with supporters from both. You will see that when they play each other, the city revolves around this event. Do not miss it!!
9. People here are warm, friendly and helpful
Yes, we are, at least Spanish people say so. We Sevillians are famous in Spain for being really nice people. We like to meet new people, we like to show them our favourite places, we like to help people when they need it and we are especially supposed to be veeeery funny… and we like party. So what is better than that?
10. Sevilla will make you feel alive
And last, but not least, Sevilla is synonymous of life. Every time you go out, you have something to do. It doesn’t matter if you want a chill night or a big one, during the day you will see all the bars and parks crowded with people enjoying the sun, and at night there always will be a party somewhere. When you leave, Alameda, Alfalfa, Hoyo19, Casino, etc. will all be really familiar to you.
Remember, ESN Sevilla is here to help you with everything you need.
Viva Sevilla y Olé!!
