Best Public Universities in Madrid

Students in Madrid need student accommodation

Madrid is a city with world class bars, restaurants, hotels, Football teams and museums. To match these, it has 4 universities that are ranked in the QS World University Rankings’ Top 500, one of the world’s most prestigious international university rankings. If you want to study in Madrid, you have to read this post about the best Universities in Madrid. After that, all you have to do is pick one and apply!

Universidade Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)

Known to the locals as La Autónoma, UAM is considered one of the best universities in Madrid. In fact, it’s one of the best in the whole country. It ranked 195th in the QS ranking as one of the top universities in the world. As it was only founded in 1968, it is frequently considered among the top 20 young universities in the world. If you want to study Law in Spain, this is the university for you – it’s by far the most prestigious Faculty of Law in the country. It’s Maths department is also highly considered in international circles.

UAM’s main campus is in Cantoblanco, a small, independent university town 15km north of Madrid. Only UAM’s faculty of Medicine is in Madrid: they teach and practice at La Paz teaching hospital. You’ll find La Paz in the famously long Paseo de la Castellana, in Chamartin.

Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Ranked 216, the Complutense University of Madrid is the largest university in Spain and one of the oldest universities in the world. At one point, Albert Einstein was teaching classes at the Complutense! It’s campus occupies the whole Ciudad Universitaria in Moncloa-Aravaca district. Most of its students do not live in the relatively expensive University halls of residence and either find a room in private residences or rent a room in a shared apartment with their friends. Definitely one of the best universities in Madrid.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M)

101 places down – ranked 317 – Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, also known as UC3M, is the top Business Administration and Economics school in the country. It’s considered one of the best universities in Madrid, too, and all of its degrees have a solid reputation. If you’re applying here, however, be warned: the Carlos III university has a reputation for being the hardest-working university in the country and the workload is said to be intense.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid

If you want to study architecture or engineering, The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid is for you. It’s not only one of the best universities in Madrid, it is considered one of the best colleges in the whole of Europe in these fields. It does not have a unified campus: instead it has different buildings across the city, including in Madrid’s city centre, in the University City, in Montegancedo (a few kilometres west of the city), and in Puente de Vallecas. QS ranked it 389.
