Sunny Lisbon in May

Editor’s note: This week’s guest writer is Brazilian Eliza. Written with her unique sense of humour, it gives you 6 Top Tips on things to do and things you can’t miss in Lisbon this May. Follow her advice to make your student / Erasmus experience in Lisbon this Spring incredible.

Are you ready for May?

You just woke up on a sunny morning and, guess what: all of a sudden, May has finally come. You then realise the 1st of May is actually an international holiday, plus it’s a Thursday – meaning you’ll probably be allowed to skip classes or work. Weather is warm, there are plenty of smiling people on the streets and school is almost over. Can it get any better?!

If you’re new in town you’ll get this very, very soon: students in Portugal are simply passionate about their social life. There’s always time for a quick coffee outside, a chat on a rooftop bar, a day on the beach, a dinner in the city centre or a few (I don’t exactly mean ‘a few’…) drinks in a super trendy club.

No matter what you’re up to, it’d be a shame if you didn’t know what Lisbon in May would be like and what to put on your social agenda, right?

Here are some hints on what to do and how to enjoy this special month:

If you’re into music festivals, why not rush and get a Rock in Rio ticket before it’s totally sold out? The originally Brazilian event is considered one of the major music festivals on earth. Over here, it’s starting on the 25th May and presenting an awesome line-up: including the Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams, Linkin Park, Arcade Fire, Lorde, Queens of the Stone Age and much more. Find out more about it on the Rock in Rio Lisboa website.

It could also be that you just got to town and have been desperate for the summer afternoons Portugal is so famous for. Indeed, we do have a passion for long sunsets sitting on the grass, drinking a couple of beers and listening to good music while spending time with our friends. Thankfully, this is all just about to start: from May to September follow Meo Outjazz’s calendar and pop in the great parties they arrange along several of Lisbon’s parks.

As the most important Portuguese film festival, IndieLisboa has been, over the years, very successful on its main goal: “to discover new films and new directors, in the universe of independent cinema”. If you are a fan of quality, independent cinema, go check their films and events held till the 4th May by visiting IndieLisboa’s website.

If you’ve made the decision to study in Portugal as an Erasmus student, you’re just about to realize how lucky you are. The fact is universities here play a strong role in Lisbon students’ lives and May happens to be the most important month for all students. This is the month when the Semana Académica, or Lisbon’s ‘students week’ is held.  Picture this: one weekend, thousands of students, lots of good music, dozens of drink stalls and all that Portuguese academic spirit you were craving for. From the 15th to the 17th May and you can even get the chance to see Nelly performing.

With all this going on in your life during May, you should maybe consider a huge amount of food to help you recover lost energy. Agreed? In fact, the best way to spoil a starving stomach away from all the city noise is in Boca do Inferno, Cascais. Only 20 min by train from the city centre of Lisbon and you can get to this paradise, feel enchanted by its beaches and kill your hangover with a super-sized hot dog over a stunning view. Follow this link and don’t miss it.

Cascais is a great place to spend a sunny day.

See that? You can now breathe in, breathe out and be sure you’ll have a student experience this Spring in beautiful Lisbon you’ll never forget!
