Originally  focused on jazz, Bird has expanded its programming to soul, funk, hip-hop and electronica as well, so you’re sure to find something you enjoy!

A household name in the Dutch jazz scene known for its ‘arty’ atmosphere, the cafe features performances from both local and international artists, while also offering arguably one of the nicest places to go for dinner in the city. On the rare occasions that it is not raining, Dizzy’s famous garden is a wonderful place to enjoy a drink. Fun fact: Dizzy is also the last cafe where world renowned jazz trumpeter Chet Baker performed before he was tragically found dead outside of his Amsterdam hotel the next day.

Irish Pubs have a worldwide reputation for combining alcohol and live music, and in Rotterdam Paddy Murphy’s does its best to live up to the reputation. The bar features live music every night, providing a platform for local and international singer-songwriters to show off their talent. Alternatively, it is also one of the best places in the city to watch international sport events. bar tender rotterdam bars

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love shots? Many successful Rotterdam night-outs start at Bar Tender for a reason. Located exactly in the middle of the city center, this bar offers a wide variety of elaborately named shooters. One of the coolest things about the bar is the glass balcony with massive see-through turntables where DJs play the newest house and techno music. Combine the music, the alcohol, and the bar set on fire all into one and you’re in for an unforgettable night out! (Or the opposite, depending on how much you drink of course..)

Toffler is the underground nightclub of Rotterdam. Literally. Located in an old pedestrian tunnel crossing under one of the busiest roads in the city center, Toffler is the place to go if you love electronic music. The club hosts a mix of the most famous DJs and local talent every weekend, and turns this into a truly great experience due to the unique shape of the club and the friendly audience. The club usually hold presales for most of its events, so in order not to be let down at the door make sure to keep up to date and buy a ticket in advance.

Another gem of Rotterdam nightlife, Perron started as a cultural initiative under an old post office as a temporary venue for all sorts of underground electronic music. Having hosted some of the most famous DJs worldwide for the past 4 years, the initiative is finally coming to an end in April this year. Reason enough for you to go out and visit the club now you still can! As with Toffler, it is highly advised you buy your tickets in advance, especially due to the popularity of the closing events. P.S. Don’t be too sad though, rumor has it the owners are opening a bigger music and arts venue closeby in the near future.. we’ll keep you posted.

#9: Bonus: De Après Skihut

skihut rotterdam bars

Join for the quality, stay for the lack thereof. Dutch people love skiing, and Après Ski (terrible traditional party music, and a lot, lot of alcohol) holds a great significance in our culture. Located on Stadhuisplein, the traditional bar area in the city center, De Skihut is where most nights end for Dutch people. Drunk out of our minds, wearing full ski attire no matter what season, we jump around and throw beer at each other until its finally time to go home. If you’re not Dutch, you’re in for one hell of a ride, and that’s exactly why you should check out De Skihut at least once and experience it yourself!

Of course, drink responsibly guys! However, if you do happen to find yourself drinking a glass too much, head back home and crash in your student appartment in Rotterdam.
