The city of the world’s oldest university is the perfect backdrop for spring. From secret gardens to wonderful food, check out 10 things students should do in Bologna in the spring:

1. Travel in time with BolognadaSballo

BolognadaSballo is a walk with Ugo, a virtual friend who accompanies you through the historic centre of Bologna with a cassette tape. Along the way, while listening to Italian music, fictional or historical characters appear to build a whole story around you. It’s a real time machine that will take you back to old Bologna.

2. Run (or walk) the Strabologna

Created 37 years ago, Strabologna is an opportunity to walk or run through the streets of this old town. On May 14, cars will disappear from the city centre and you can enjoy a quiet Sunday, appreciating the architectural and cultural beauties of the most hidden corners of Bologna.

3. Marvel at Giardini e Terrazzi

Giardini e Terrazzi returns on May 12 to 14 at the Giardini Margherita. The event will consist of a real market-exhibition dedicated to plants and flowers. It’s the perfect plan for a springy afternoon where you can simply enjoy a nice walk along the colourful stands and breathe in the powerful flowery scent.

4. Enjoy food from Italian soil at Il Mercato Contadino

It’s a shame to miss the weekly ritual of going to the market where local farmers offer natural produce. You can find seasonal fruits and vegetables, cheeses, organic honey, herbs, and much more every Thursday afternoon in Piazza Funo. Very Italian.

5. Drink like a local at Festival dei Birrai Eretici

Lots of music, but especially many, many craft beers are ready to flood the Dopolavoro Ferroviario park from May 19 to 21 for the seventh edition of the Birrai Eretici Festival. Thirteen local pubs are ready to surprise even the most refined palates of every beer taster.

6. Walk through hidden gardens

Every year for one weekend only, Diverdeinverde opens up Bologna’s hidden gardens and parks in the city centre for everyone to see. It’s a rare opportunity to see about 50 spots that are normally inaccessible from the public eye. From May 19 to 21, discover a bit more about Bologna and attend a series of cultural events!

7. Remember a race car champion

The Lamborghini Museum is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Brazilian F1 champion, Ayrton Senna. From April 12 to October 9, you can check out memorable photos, personal effects and all the race cars he drove, from the Parilla Kart, the two Formula Fords, to the Ralt F3, and his very first Formula 1 car, the Toleman.

8. Discover the future of film

The Future Film Festival takes place every year in Bologna. This year marks the 19th edition of the Festival, and it will take place between May 2 and 7. The purpose is to showcase the present and the future of images in film. This year’s focus will be the exploration of the “acting” of animated characters. It’s sure to be interesting and it’s a chance to sharpen your Italian!

9. Dance like crazy at Music Inside Rimini

On May 7, hop on a one-hour train ride to Remini and dance during the Music Inside Festival. We recommend spending the night and enjoying your headache by sipping on isotonic drinks and playing beach volleyball.

10. Ditch the cutlery at Finger Food Festival in Ferrara

From June 1 to 4, hop on a train from Bologna Centrale and arrive in Ferrara half an hour later. It’s one of the cities hosting the Finger Food Festival, and it’s the perfect backdrop to enjoy Italian (and international) street food. Marvel at the city’s Renaissance buildings such as the Este Castle, the Ferrara Cathedral, and the Diamanti Palace, home to the National Picture Gallery.
