Wonder where you can go this year without completely breaking the bank? We’ve got you covered! Here are 10 budget destinations (in no particular order) that you should check out in 2017.

1. Morocco

Morocco

Why: For Europeans, Morocco is a very convenient destination. It’s easy to reach and tickets sometimes go for pocket change with Ryanair. It’s also a great destination for the traveller who wants to experience a little bit more than just sun and sand. Marrakech is an obvious place to start, and can offer palaces, mosques and museums. It’s also possible to get guided trips to the beautiful Moroccan deserts and mountains. For those who love water, Taghazout is wonderful for a surfing holiday.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

Why: Where to start? Portugal as a country has it all and Lisbon is the perfect place for a weekend or a week off. The Portuguese capital has sunny weather, great pastries, and a very good nightlife. Most of all, it’s an affordable destination with the convenience of a great metro system that will take you across the city within minutes. If you get tired of walking up hills, you can easily escape to the close by beach town of Costa da Caparica or Guincho for some sun and surf.

Why: Right, so it might not be the hippest place this year, but if you’re looking for an escape to the sun, you can find some amazing deals to the Canary Islands. Not too many attractions and things to see, but there sure are plenty of cold beers and sun beds. Tenerife also remains one of the cheapest destinations in Europe, so it can fit into most student budgets!

Why: Vietnam has become increasingly popular for the last few years. Not really surprising as it’s a truly beautiful country with landscapes and bays that will take your breath away. If you’re into exploring cities, Hanoi is a great choice with temples, vendors and amazing street food. Rumour says the nightlife is great too. Why: Don’t give Barcelona so much attention this year and check out Granada, a true beauty in the Spanish south. Located next to the impressive mountain range of Sierra Nevada, Granada is a great place to enjoy medieval architecture, with the Alhambra palace being the number one attraction. If you get enough of architecture and sights, you can visit a Moorish bath for some relaxation, followed by a trip to the bar for some fresh tapas and wine. Pretty sweet.

Travelling Costs

  • 0.5L draught beer: €2
  • Dorm bed: €12 – €20 for a night
  • Local transportation (one-way): €1.20

7. Slovakia

Slovakia

Why: Think small, picturesque towns next to enormous peaks and you’re pretty much there. Whereas Austria can be quite expensive, Slovakia stands as an affordable alternative with the same amount of fun. You can enjoy sightseeing and food in Bratislava, or a stay in your hiking boots in one of the many national parks. If you’re a fan of snow, head for the ski resorts which are of excellent value.

If Amsterdam is on the list as well, a good tip is to stay in one of the nearby cities and visit the capital on a day-trip, guaranteed to save a few bucks. An underestimated destination is Rotterdam, which offers nice cafés and an excellent food market (called Markthal) with everything from local waffles to craft beers.
